In the USA you say “BBQ” or “grill”, this would be standing outside “grilling” meat on the fire, be it gas or wood. In South Africa we call it a “Braai”, this is such a popular activity that we even made it into the symbol for our National Heritage Day.

Along with the aptly named Hooters restaurant there are also some other interesting franchisers that I felt I needed to introduce you to, the names are endlessly amusing: Bone Daddy’s and Twin Peaks.
Most of the cars don’t have yellow indicator lights at the back. They either don’t have indicators (or if they do they don’t use them) or it’s the red back light that just has a slight flicker.
In America they mostly give directions in the form of North, South, East and West instead of right or left! Crazy if there isn’t any ocean or mountain to help you figure out which way is which – as a result I get lost more often then ever before in my life!
TV adverts take on a whole new evil meaning over here – I swear they take up more then half of any program or movie you might be watching, it is SO irritating! The topics of these ads are mostly about cars, all types of insurance and my personal worst medical/drug stuff! Ugh hate it!
I have never traveled to a country where people are more visibly patriotic. Everywhere you look you see the American flag or the Texas flag, most of the houses in the suburbs have flag poles and everyone has a USA t-shirt or their state sports team t-shirt or cap or something! At first I thought it was kinda lame but now I love it! I think SA should get on this bandwagon!
So I believe that this has made the news in South Africa. For those of you that don’t know what I am talking about let me explain. (more…)
My favourite southern word is YA’LL! Simply love it!
In South Africa we refer to this symbol # as a “hash”, over here they call it a “pound” ….hmmm weird
Every state in the US has a “downtown” which is the equivalent of our “CBD” (Central Business District).
I find the variety of robots (that would be traffic lights for all you American peeps) in Dallas quite fascinating – I have found a few examples. Random post I know, but each time I drive past some of these robots that seem to be dangling on a wire I laugh!
