La Perla has been a bit of a mixed bag for me for years, in other words, I have a love-hate relationship with it! Drinks at the bar or under the umbrellas on the deck = amazing! Late night cosy dinner dates inside = awesome! Driving around for 30min trying to find parking = not so awesome and I have had more than one experience where the food just didn’t do anything for me…nothing in particular ‘wrong’ with it, just a bit bland as well as incredibly expensive.
So keeping all of this in mind my friend and I tried it out for lunch after a day on the beach. We arrived without a booking and they were able to seat us immediately – yay. Although their service in my opinion has never been very good, they were pretty on it that day. We both ordered the fish and chips, which sounds like it would be cheap but it was about R120 and really wasn’t enough as a main meal I thought. It was however delicious and fresh!
I do have friends that are loyal La Perla clients and every time they go there they have the best service and spectacular food. After my most recent visit though my opinion remains that as a venue, it’s great, beautiful decor and wonderful view and if you want classy sundowners at a restaurant that is a Sea Point institution – this is the place for you, but it still doesn’t make the top of my list for lunch or dinner unfortunately.
